The National Eating Disorder Association recognizes the following symptoms as warning sings. Dramatic weight loss; preoccupation with weight, food, calories, and dieting; refusal to eat certain foods; making frequent comments about feeling “fat”; denying feeling hungry or has concern with eating in public; excessive or rigid exercise regimen; and intense fear of weight gain.
There are also physical symptoms of an eating disorder which may include: loss of menstrual period, stomach cramps, dizziness, fainting, feeling cold often, sleep problems, dental issues, dry skin and impaired immune functioning.
You may also notice that someone has difficulty concentrating and thinking clearly. Additionally, you may observe inflexible thinking, meaning the individual can only see things in a black and white manner and not be able to see alternative perspectives. For example, thinking foods are either only “good” or “bad”.
Individuals may also begin to withdraw socially and not engage in the activities they once enjoyed and may isolate from friends and family.
Another behavior to be aware of is when someone takes on specific food rules or rituals. This may look like not eating certain types of food, not allowing certain foods to touch, excessive chewing, mixing bizarre foods, eating rapidly or slowly, leaving the table early or going to the restroom immediately following all their meals.
It is important to mentation that there are different types of eating disorders that present with different types of symptoms. Additionally, there are varying levels of severity that require different levels of care.
